Alejandro Lopez, Painter & Engraver

Spanish Version

Every so often I run into an artist that makes me feel as if they should’ve been working on a different era. Their work has a poetic feel in their method of executing and their images have that signature style that you can automatically pick out.

That is the best way that I can describe the way I feel when I seen the work by Alejandro Lopez. His “Señoritas” are so beautiful and I love the way that though their expressions are stoic, the colors and symbolisms utilized in his work tell a wonderfully woven story.

Alejandro Lopez is a painter and engraver, located in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. He has had over 50 solo exhibitions and around 180 collaborative exhibitions. He has been recognized as Best Emerging Artist in Florida, has won first place and honorary mentions in juried shows and was selected for national engraving biennials.

I had the pleasure of asking him a few questions and he graciously answered in the most humble way.

At what age and reason, did you decide to become an artist?

I’ve been studying art since the age of 12, but it wasn’t until I was 22yo, when I finished my art education and my decision was solidified.

What message if any, do you incorporate in your work?

The significance of the Latina Woman, the stories that come from the heart and how funny and humorous the Mexican Folklore could be.

Has your method of painting changed and do you think they will continue changing?

Yes, of course I have evolutionized. You can see it on a day to day basis as I acquire new experiences.

How do you feel that latin artists are represented in the art scene?

Well, I think that it needs more attention, more spaces , more opportunities… it seems to me that it is important to continue working constantly and be honest in what is expressed so that it opens more doors.

What changes or movements do you feel need to happen so that we can progress in the art world?

Sensitization of the public. Facilitating for the public to be in contact with the arts.

What are your goals for 2019?

Continue working. Travel for inspiration and continue experimenting. I would like to take and host more workshops in other countries.

If you could have a cup of tea or coffee with a famous artist from the past or present, who would it be and why?

I would choose 3, Gustav Klimt, Andy warhol and Rufino Tamayo, only so that I could listen to them and learn from their experiences.

Thank you so much Alejandro for allowing me to do this interview with you. Your work is inspiring!
